Monte Rio Musings

Internet Bullying – It’s Not Just For School Kids Anymore:  Dear friends and neighbors of Monte Rio, there is a fly on the wall armed with a keyboard who has been indulging in the sport of internet bullying by writing untruths about many local businesses and people.  While I understand the fascination of watching a train wreck please try and look away from this one if you can. Responding to it in any way gives this person the illusion of power so let’s not let them have that.  Like all bullies, this one will turn their attention to some other 98 pound weakling soon enough, meanwhile, let’s not give in to the irritation of a little sand in our eyes.

Record Numbers Attend Monte Rio Independence Day Celebrations:  How many? It’s impossible to say precisely, but several thousand people swarmed the beach for the festivities during the weekend of July 2nd and 3rd.  The community owes a big “Thank You” to Edward Huser and entourage for their organizational assistance and their tireless security and help throughout the long, hot day and well into the night.  This was the first time in many years that both the Monte Rio Chamber of Commerce and the Monte Rio Recreation & Park District agreed to give a coordinator the authority to organize parking, set up and all activities down on the beach where in past years’ there has been a kind of friendly chaos.

Also this year a donation was asked for parking and the parking volunteers reported that most people were more than happy to provide a few dollars to the MRRPD whose properties they have enjoyed for free for so many years at a time when they need the boost from the community.  In fact, several folks doubled or tripled their donation.

Overall, reviews were favorable as most people preferred the help with parking and liked being able to visibly see security if help was needed. Edward had his crews armed with radios so that nothing was missed.  It was another wonderful Independence Weekend in Monte Rio, one with a lot more people and a visible difference in its organization.

Monte Rio’s 2nd Annual National Night Out Event Was Held Tuesday, August 2nd at Koret Park and the Monte Rio Community Center.  Since 1984 this event has become known as America’s Night Out Against Crime. More than 37 million people in nearly 16,000 communities throughout all fifty states were expected to participate this year.  National Night Out is a night to celebrate safety and crime prevention and to strengthen and expand programs for the remaining 364 days. Thank you to everyone who came out and celebrated with their friends, family and neighbors.  Hosts Monte Rio Watch, Monte Rio Chamber of Commerce, Monte Rio Fire Association and Monte Rio Recreation and Park District provided FREE hot dogs, ice cream, popcorn and entertainment – THANK YOU!
