River Family Christmas in Monte Rio Hall

“River Family Christmas”
at the Russian River Hall in Monte Rio
By Kit Mariah
It is Thanksgiving weekend and at the River family household, all thoughts turn to Christmas. Hardly is the turkey finished, when preparations for the River family Christmas party get underway. Since Eleanor River’s four sons and their families live so far apart, they get together for just one weekend and celebrate two holidays. Though the usual observance is a month away, the River family finds a way to observe all the traditions of Christmas, while preparing for a big holiday party.

Sonoma County - National Geographic Best of 2012

Best of the World 2012
National Geographic rates Sonoma County in Top 10
(reprinted from National Geographic web site - see link below)

American as Apple Pie
“I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma,” you hear people say, as if they were one and the same. Sure, Sonoma’s 300-plus wineries, like those of vine-centric Napa, offer peak wine tasting, from Ravenswood’s deep Zinfandels to Gloria Ferrer’s sophisticated sparklers. But if you’ve visited only the county’s wineries, come back to sample the astounding diversity that makes Sonoma one of America’s travel treasures.

Exposing the One Percent - Occupy Emerges across the U.S.

Exposing the One Percent:
Freeport McMoRan Exploits Workers and the Environment
By Peter Phillips and Kimberly Soeiro

As the Occupy Movement emerges across the US and around the world, a prime example of greed and exploitation is occurring with very little coverage in the global corporate media. Members of the global top one percent are killing striking workers and using raw military power to protect their billions of dollars of annual profits. And the highest levels of US Government encourage and protect the exploiters.

Guerneville Homeless Shelter Community Meeting

Seeking Consensus
Guerneveille Reaches Out to Residents
about a Community Homeless Shelter

By Sylvia WynnLindeman

On November 3rd, the River Area Shelter and Downtown (RASAD) Task Group hosted a community-wide meeting to discuss a year-round homeless shelter for Guerneville.

Charged with the tasks of recommending a workable site, an appropriate service delivery model, and “standards of (public) behavior”, the RASAD was created in July of 2010 by the Community Development Commission (CDC ) after Efren Carrillo and the County Administrator asked for a workable solution to homelessness along the lower river.   A diverse group itself, the RASAD has worked hard to overcome the cacophony of differing opinions while engaging the community in its deliberation process.

Occupy Wall Street Movement: The Larger Purpose

The Larger Purpose of the
Occupy Wall Street Movement
A Personal View
by Fred Krueger
Last weekend I participated in the local Occupy Santa Rosa event. The turnout was impressive. In a city of 150,000 people, at least 3,000 local citizens filled the grassy area in front of City Hall and them marched to City Center before returning to City Hall. Protester signs addressed upwards of a hundred issues, including unjust home foreclosures; corporate greed over human need; the growing numbers of hungry people; the rising levels of poverty; the export of manufacturing jobs to Asia; skyrocketing college tuition; threats to the post office; government misinformation about Iraq; the malfeasance of big banks; growing inequalities in wealth; duplicity in the global financial system; corporate disinformation about global climate change; the XL Keystone pipeline from Canada; unregulated campaign contributions; the polarization of government,  etc., etc.

The Art & Science of Mulching Gardens

Using Compost & Mulches
in your Garden

The use of compost and mulches made from recycled organics has surged dramatically since the state mandated that yard and wood trimmings be recycled. Since 1993, Sonoma County residents have sent over 1.4 million tons of “green materials” to Sonoma Compost. These materials are converted to the compost and mulch prized by backyard gardeners, grape growers and landscapers. Most large public landscape projects now utilize mulch when preparing soils for high traffic use.

Sonoma County Supervisor Efren Carrillo - Our County 11-11

Energy Efficiency Rebates - The Sonoma County Energy Independence Program (SCEIP), and the Regional Climate Protection Authority, in partnership with Energy Upgrade California™ in Sonoma County, have increased local incentives now offering homeowners up to 100-percent rebate for Energy Analysis services. In addition, rebates up to $6,000 are now available for home energy efficiency upgrades completed through the Whole House Upgrade program.

A Home Energy Analysis includes a customized evaluation of the home’s energy use and identifies specific opportunities to minimize energy waste, and improve comfort, many of which are eligible for further rebates and financing. This is an expansion of the current Energy Analysis rebate offered by SCEIP. Any Sonoma County homeowner may choose to have an analysis performed on their home. Immediate plans for energy efficiency improvements are not required.

An additional $1,000 flat-rate rebate brings the total rebate for the Energy Upgrade Basic Package projects to $2,000. An additional $2,000 flat-rate rebate for Advanced Package projects means a homeowner can now get up to $6,000 in rebates.

Both incentive programs are limited-time offers, available on a first-come/first-served basis while funds last. Funding for this program is made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). For more information on these rebates, how to contact a Participating Contractor or HERS II Rater, or Energy Upgrade California™ in Sonoma County, call (707) 565-6470 or visit www.EnergyUpgradeSonoma.org

Ours to Protect - People who float or paddle the Russian River are often amazed at how quickly “civilization” seems to disappear. Whether they hop into a canoe at Burke’s in Forestville, a kayak in Alexander Valley rented from River’s Edge or an inner tube that they launch at Steelhead Beach, paddlers can go for long stretches without encountering other humans. Unfortunately, because they don’t see signs of habitation, some people assume that conveniences like restrooms or trash cans don’t exist along the river. While it’s unclear the impact that recreation use has on river water quality, even one person using the river as a toilet or trash can is one too many.

Late last spring, Don McEnhill, the Russian RiverKeeper and I convened a meeting of river outfitters and public agencies to develop a campaign targeted to recreational users. We identified existing restrooms along the river (surprisingly, there were more than we thought!) and determined that we needed two things: directional signs visible to people using the river indicating locations of restrooms and trash cans and an updated map of the river.

The RiverKeeper worked with Sonoma County Water Agency and Sonoma County Regional Parks over the summer on both tasks. In August signs were erected at several points along the river, from Mendocino County to Casini Ranch, at beaches where restrooms are available. Signs were posted at all public beaches and at many private locations, thanks to the generosity of landowners, including Alexander Valley Campground, River’s Edge Kayak & Canoe Trips, Burke’s Canoes, Johnson’s Beach, Vacation Beach and Casini Ranch. These landowners also agreed to allow river users access to restrooms and trash and recycling.

The sign design and template was provided by the City of Santa Rosa, who has posted similar signs at creek crossings throughout the city. The sign features an egret, butterfly, fish and a river/creek, with the words “Ours to Protect”. Smaller signs indicate the location and include symbols for restrooms and trash. The signs are being removed for the winter and will be  re-posted late in the spring of 2012.

A brochure featuring an updated river map with access points and restroom locations has been designed by the Water Agency and Regional Parks. It will be printed this winter, with funding from several agencies and private donations. The map will also be available for downloading on the Regional Parks website.

Tourists flock to Sonoma County to use the Russian River. Let’s make sure they understand their role as stewards of this precious resource.

I wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving…all of us living in Sonoma County have much to be thankful for – and in these difficult times, Thanksgiving is an opportunity to reflect on the good things in our lives that are sometimes all too easy to forget…like the beautiful Russian River and our incredible coast.

REVIEW: Powell Avenue Market in Healdsburg

Powell Avenue Market

Today, Sunday, October 23, 2011, my wife Joyce and I went up to Healdsburg to experience some friends of ours Rob and Ann, who over the past few months have been putting in some pretty fierce overtime creative action to get their new local and personal Market open, hoping as Ann has told us, to get that feeling that she had when she was a kid, growing up and she headed on down to grab a quick slice of local Healdsburg color.

Sebastopol - Support Your Community the Holiday Season

Give the Gift of Your Support
to Your Community This Holiday Season

We’ve experienced challenging budget decisions, cut back services, and continue to face uncertain, perhaps declining, revenues. We need your support – Sebastopolians, Sebastapudlians, Sebtowners, and all community members by whatever favorite name that identifies you as a local.

You can help the City and our Community by keeping your holiday purchases local.  This doesn’t mean simply gift purchases.  It includes much more – food, gasoline, dining out, contributions to non-profits, charities, and service organizations.  Whenever you are about to make a transaction, “think Sebastopol first,” the holiday message from our businesses.  Their message is really a good message for all year long.

The Holiday Season is almost here. Well, for some, it’s already underway, starting as early as Halloween.  We invite you to enjoy your holidays at home, in Sebastopol.  Our town is gearing up for a festive season with a new look. Hopefully, those white lights, that were problematic last year, will go up on Main Street this year, thanks to the generosity of Sebastopol Hardware and the many donors who contributed to the expense.

Adding to this warm and inviting ambiance will be the decorated and colorful store fronts.  The annual tree lighting on The Plaza is scheduled for December 1, Thursday.  There will be music, performances, candle-light singing, a visit from Santa, and likely some surprises.  That same date hosts “Dine Out for Life,” a local program where participating restaurants contribute part of their meal and/or drink revenues to Food for Thought, a local food bank.

To make shopping and carrying your armloads of bags easier, the City, Chamber of Commerce, and Sonoma County Transit will repeat a first-time activity from last year – free rides on the new Sebastopol Shuttle, on Saturdays only.  This year the program is extended several weeks.  It will go from November 19 to December 24.  The Shuttle, our new local bus for the in-town-only Route 24, has one floor level [no difficult steps] and can kneel to make entry and exit easier.  It drives to or near many of the key locations in town, both cross town and up town.  Ride the Sebastopol Shuttle and be car-free and care-free.  Our friendly drivers deal with the traffic for us and parking is never a problem. “Super Saturday” riders on December 3 will receive special offers from stores participating in this now-city-wide event.

Parking is more available than ever in our downtown area and at no charge.  The lots on South High Street and behind the Chamber of Commerce building on South Main have no time restrictions now.  So if you have more to do than can be accomplished in one, two, or three hours, seek out one of these parking spaces.

Enjoy a more relaxed experience away from the hectic crowds.  Our downtown is a unique experience with a variety of specialty items to choose from our stores.  Meander from shop to shop, grab a cup of coffee, sit down for a meal, and likely chat with someone you know whom you run into. Remember our other shopping areas, north and south of town, and our restaurants, all over.  Sebastopol businesses are our friends and neighbors, so what can be better than spending your holiday at home.

The community gathers twice during the Holiday Season for a traditional meal with all the trimmings and more.  The first free event is on Thanksgiving Day, the other one on Christmas Day, both at the Community Church. Volunteer ahead of time or at the event.  Come for some companionship and fun.

Let’s remember those in need, too, and our many non-profit, service and charitable organizations that serve them.  The City has not been able to give as many community grants as in previous years, so your help here is crucial.  Your generosity can provide food, clothing, shelter, toys and other small gifts for our more vulnerable members.   It can extend services as well, such as driving to medical appointments.  Remember that you can give your time, too, to help.

Celebrate the Holiday Season with great appreciation for the local flavor and global vision of our community.  Slow down and take it in.  Think Sebastopol First.

KATE ON CARS: Car Warranty Woes by Kate Jonasse

Car Warranty Woes

I had a customer with an Audi, really nice car, come in for another 5,000 mile maintenance service.  It had only about 10,000 miles on it at the time and was still covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.  By all means, one would think this car would be spic ‘n’ span, and mechanically flawless.
