What’s Up in Windsor ~ Summer Events on the Town Green

Our season has started in Windsor! With better weather forecasted ahead, we very much look forward to our 10th annual Town Green Summer Concert and Movie Series! Where has 10 years gone anyway? It seems like just yesterday that we held our first concert, advertised it within the Town, and then held our breath to see if anyone would show up. We had 600 people at our first concert, and now on our busiest nights, we have hosted 6,000 of you all at one time!

The Tuesday Night Kid Movie Series starts on June 1. Movies start 15 minutes after sunset, and all movies are PG unless indicated. The first movie is Monsters vs. Aliens, and our series ends on August 10 with… AVATAR! We hope that will be a warm summer night with a full moon – the best way to enjoy our fabulous Town Green.

For the full schedule, go to: http://www.starrymovienights.com/. Our major sponsors this year are Pizzeria DePaoli, Powell’s Sweet Shoppe and Wal-Mart. The Downtown Windsor Merchants’ Association brings you and your family this wonderful event.

Windsor’s Parks and Recreation Department brings you the Summer Concert Series – starting June 17 with the Fred McCarty Band, following with Wonder Bread 5, Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs (do not miss this one!), and later two of our favorites – Tommy Castro on July 22 and Pride and Joy on July 29. We put down a wood parquet dance floor right in front of the band and we highly encourage dancing. But beware; we also create nicknames for our most regular dancers. You know who you are!

Our showcase band sponsor this year is KJZY 93.7. We have so many other generous companies who have helped to sponsor these events and to help the Town pay for this great summer entertainment, that you need to go to http://www.townofwindsor.com/ to see them all. We are extremely grateful for their generosity in these difficult times.

Starting August 12, the Windsor Farmer’s Market continues our concert series with the Soulshine Blues Band and ends August 26 with another Windsor favorite – Beatles Flashback.

And – for another year we are pleased to tell you that Shakespeare on the Green is coming back, this year with Romeo and Juliet in mid July. Stay tuned for more details. And if you’d like to help sponsor this Shakespeare event, their website is: http://www.theatergreen.com/.

During these summer events, we are pleased to invite one and all from throughout the county to our award winning Town Green. We also have free family lawn games, free parking at Windsor High school a half mile away, but better yet, ride your bikes and get free valet bicycle parking provided by Windsor town staff! There are also food vendors on Thursday nights as our Farmers’ Market also operates during the concert series. And there is “beverage service”, including fabulous wines and beers, offered for sale by Windsor non-profits.

Windsor welcomes one and all to enjoy the summer with us. You will really get a sense of who we are when you visit during these events. And our downtown restaurants and businesses welcome you also! Be sure to stroll along McClelland Drive, Windsor Road and go under the archway toward the railroad tracks to find a really cool candle store (Creative Wick) owned by a local. Most of our restaurants and stores are in fact owned by local Windsor residents.

We love Windsor – and we look forward to see you in our Downtown this summer!
