Sonoma County Gardener's Resource Guide 2011

Each year, while publishing this guide to support Sonoma County garden businesses, I meet new people. Some are new to the industry and some are simply new to me. See that photograph on the cover? Having this image is the result of getting into a conversation with Joan Humberstone.

I was updating the information for Lone Pine Gardens, and we got to talking. One thing led to another while we chatted, so when I asked if she had any photographs of Lone Pine’s gardens, she sent me images that blew me away.

Not only are the gardens astoundingly beautiful, the quality of Joan’s photographs are impressive to say the least. So I asked for more, and high resolution, so I could publish some. She was the answer to my prayers. I wanted a beautiful garden on the cover this year, and I got one. Not just beautiful, but interesting beyond my expectations. Look at those plants!

I haven’t even met Joan in person, nor have I ever been to Lone Pine Gardens. But I’m going now! Joan is the bookkeeper for this business, Janet and Ian Price are the owners. This is an experience I have to have!

And there’s one of the great joys of gardening. Going to local nurseries is not at all like buying plants at home improvement stores. Many nurseries create gardens so you can see mature plants in their potential setting. After all, these nursery owners are what I call plant junkies. They fall in love with color, leaf shape, the wonder of shiny leaves, variegated leaves, pink, yellow, blue flowers. It goes on and on. It’s not just a business…it’s a passion.

And that’s what gardening is all about. In this year’s guide you’ll find articles written by professionals in their field...people who love what they do, and want to share what they know. From garden design to planting with natives, and building water features, these are people you want to get to know. They’ll spread joy into your garden. As Chuck Sackett of Apple Blossom Nursery says, “I’m one of the happiest people I know. After 39 years, this is still my hobby. How fortunate that I get to make a living doing this!”
